Procedure for Successful Stain Removal

We offer you a broad selection of products for stain removal. On the one hand we have a collection of base chemicals that may be used together to successfully remove stains. However, use of these requires fundamental knowledge of chemistry and the function of each base chemical.

On the other hand we offer a variety of products that may be used for many different types of stains, as well as some stain removers specifically made for the removal of one specific type of stain.

It should be noted at this point, that stain removal most definitely requires knowledge and patience in order to be successful. The following procedure will help achieve success:

Identifying the stain or type of stain saves time and hassle. In order to identify a stain, the following will help:

1. Statement of the owner
           2. Appearance of the stain
           3. Where is the stain?
           4. How does the stain feel to touch?
           5. How does the stain smell?
           6. How dense is the stain?
           7. How old is the stain?
           8. Composition of the stain (starch, sugar etc.)

In order to be able to identify the fibre/fabric a burn test may be made. In this test one has to note whether or not the fibre/fabric melts and how it smells. In this test one can differentiate between the fibres/fabrics that melt (synthetics or blends) and the fibres/fabrics that do not melt but burn (natural).

Wool - smells like burnt hair and leaves behind a brittle, black ash.
Cotton/Linen - smells like burnt paper and leaves behind a light, flaky, white ash.
Rayon/Viscose - smells like burnt paper and leaves behind a grey, soft ash.
Silk - smells like burnt hair and leaves behind a soft, grey ash.
Nylon/Polyamide - smells like hot wax and melts.
Polyester - smells acrid and melts.
Acrylic - smells penetratingly sweet and melts.
Olefin (eg. polyethylene) - smells like hot tar and melts.

Once the information about the stain has led to identification and the fibre/fabric has been identified, one should follow the following procedure:

           1. Summarize the information and plan the procedure for stain removal in steps.
           2. Select the right chemicals/products.
           3. Test for fibre/fabric and colour fastness in an inconspicuous spot.
           4. If a crust is present, use a plastic spatula or similar to remove it.
           5. Apply the selected chemicals/products. Do not overwet!
           6. Absorb excess moisture. Do not brush or rub too hard as this may damage the fibre/fabric and cause lint.
           7. Work from the edge towards the centre.
           8. Give the chemicals/products enough dwell time to work.
           9. Absorb excess chemicals. Neutralize with water and absorb with cloth. Repeat steps 1. to 9. if necessary.

Do not forget that most stains consist of more than one substance!

1. Generally it is easier to remove a new stain than an old one, especially when the old stain has already been treated with other, not appropriate, products. First, all crusts and hard residues should be removed with a blunt object, like the back of a knife.

2. Color changes due to the age of the stain may not be removeable.

3. Apply on a clean cloth  and work on the stain, from the outside inwards. Do not spray directly onto the stain, as this could press the stain deeper into the carpet. Blot, don't rub, in order to avoid felting or similar damage to the fibers.

4. Iron with a warm iron until everything has been absorbed.

5. Apply product directly onto the stain and let the product work for 10 minutes. Afterwards blot with a clean cloth and remove.

6. Always follow instructions on the product label.
